Slava Buchkovich
Ribbon embroidery has been practiced by Queens and Princesses as an enduring art and the best cure for depression. Slava came to the United States from Ukraine after Chernobyl to find help and a cure for her daughter Maria, who became very sick after the radiation explosion. In 1995, Slava saw an article in McCall’s Needlework and to cure her depression over Maria’s illness, she taught herself ribbon embroidery—She was 50 years old!! Slava states ”When I was embroidering my mind focused on something nice and beautiful and I was able to rest my worry.”
She has written and published many articles and a book on ribbon embroidery for women in Ukraine, as well as taught classes at the Kenosha Public Museum and Senior Citizen Center. Slava truly believes it is never too late to learn something new; to find inspiration no matter how busy or hurtful one’s life turns. |
