Marilyn Kemp has an M.F.A. degree from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and throughout the 1970s, exhibited her ceramic work both locally and nationally. Her pottery is strongly influenced by the years she spent in the early 70s working with Abraham Cohn at his Milwaukee Potter’s Wheel Studio.
In a broader sense, her work adheres to the English Stoneware and Japanese/Korean aesthetic promoted by Bernard Leach in the 1940s. She recently returned to working in clay after retiring from a teaching career and maintains a studio in Racine, WI. At present, her focus is the vessel form, using her throwing skills to create pieces that can be both useful and objects of contemplation. |
