Jacob PikeMy 5th anniversary was the first time I tried my hand at woodturning. I made a lidded box for my wife on my Dad’s lathe. I talked about it so much that the next month my wife got me a lathe for Father’s Day. That has led me down a road of endless possibilities. I first started, like most, turning functional items. As my skills have evolved so has my desire to turn art. I enjoy adding embellishments to the wood such as paint, texturing or color, but I always try and preserve some of the natural wood. Wood, like people, has its own character and personalities that should be able to express itself in each piece that is created. The forms, designs, and finishes are chosen for each piece. There is not a one size fits all for the pieces I create. Most of my inspiration comes from thrown ceramics. Like pottery, woodturning follows the same concepts and possible design characteristics.
